Request

  1. Apparently, people on cruise ships are given an A4 leaflet entitled “Welcome to Dover” with a list of attractions on the reverse side.  Is this the case?
  2. If yes, why is it only given to cruise ship passengers?
  3. Why is the useful leaflet not available at the Museum, Town Hall or Roman Painted House?
  4. This leaflet is published by DDC so who decided to only give it to cruise ship passengers and why?
  5. Will DDC review this practice so this helpful informative leaflet can be available at all Dover attractions?
  6. Who at DDC is responsible for Tourism?  Which Officer?

Response

The Visitor Information Team man a cruise information desk for the Port of Dover. The team have a cruise leaflet that people can help themselves to called 'Step Ashore' – this is available at the Museum, Town Hall or Roman Painted House and on the White Cliffs Country website at https://www.whitecliffscountry.org.uk/pdfs/step-ashore-dover-english.pdf along with our other visitor guides.

We found that as cruise visitors are only here for a short time they do not want or need all of the information that is provided in our guides and so we are trialling a simplified A4 sheet which is cheaper to produce. We do not have enough of these to stock at all of our locations but if feedback is good, we will certainly look at increasing print numbers in the future.

The Strategic Place, Tourism and Town Centre Manager has responsibility for tourism.
